Utilizing degraded VHS tapes and photographs, assemblage techniques, and sometimes choreography, these five filmmakers reckon with their origins and predecessors—whether biological or chosen, living or long dead. By activating the intimate spaces of personal and collective archives, they present recollections of life as it was, enliven erased histories, challenge national mythologies, re-trace geographies of home, or grieve. For some, these tethers represent haunting aches, and for others, they provide the pretext for triumphant assuredness.
