A childhood birthday VHS becomes a locus for Huss Al-Chokhdar to contemplate his relationship to a distant Cairo and his relatives there. What once was an idealistic utopia is now out of reach. By incorporating sequences of performance for camera, the filmmaker underscores that, against all odds, the ache to return persists.

Huss is a Glasgow-based Arab multidisciplinary artist, performer, filmmaker and curator. His work explores queerness, memory and exile, weaving together personal and political narratives that meditate on migration, inherited memory and imagined futures. Working across film, performance, installation and sound, his practice creates spaces for fragmented histories and silenced voices, challenging dominant narratives around Arab and diasporic experiences. His work has been presented across the UK and internationally, from major cultural institutions including the Southbank Centre and V&A Dundee to festivals, galleries and performance spaces across Europe and beyond. Alongside his artistic practice, Huss works as Festival Coordinator at Refugee Festival Scotland and Curator at the Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF). He was also a Programming Fellow at LUX Scotland in 2024.
