Elegantly shot on black-and-white 16mm stock, Transmutation is a surreal tale of bodily transformation and rebirth(s). Drawing on a host of disparate influences—from the early avant-garde cinema of Buñuel and Deren to the English folk horror wave to the body horror prosthetics of Yuzna and Cronenberg—Jimenez crafts a wholly distinctive world of queered bodies.

Charlie Jimenez is a London and Dorchester-based filmmaker/artist known for their surreal and ethereal moving-image and performance art. Charlie creates visions which are both personal and mythological. Their films focus on characters' whose bodies navigate liminal and abject worlds where transformation co-exists with decay and creation. Charlie is well-known in London's underground live performance scene, with a background in butoh and animation, Charlie creates films which combine visual spectacle with introspective themes on memory, gender, and identity, Charlie's style focusing on the intersection between body and spaces. Their art reckons with a deep emotional connection to memory and the imagination. Charlie has collaborated with artists like FKA Twigs (for her Eusexua concert), HMLTD, and Jockstrap. Their previous no-budget shorts 'Keratin', 'Engines', and 'A Fugue', have travelled in the International Festival circuit, gaining the ‘Best Student Film’ for their student short Keratin at ASVOF 2024, alongside ‘Best International Experimental Short’ in both 2023 and 2026 at the Bloomsday Film Festival. Their most recent short Transmutation premiered at Ann Arbor's 64th edition, and is their most ambitious, bold, and sublime short to date, channeling the spirit of early avant-garde cinema through trans-allegory and surreal body-horror.
