Creating a space of exploration around queer bodies and responses
to our bodies (ourselves), the artists in this program employ diverse
perspectives as they challenge popular stereotypes and look at and
for ways to explore illness, mortality, movement, physical ability,
trans/formation, gender expression and mis/treatment. These shorts
traverse documentation, reflection and critique, all the while questioning
how queer bodies navigate precarious life-and-death experiences. Featuring
work by Lee Krist, Aleada Minton, Aleesa Cohene and Benny Nemerofsky
Ramsay. Curated by Scott Berry Party to follow at Dumba.

Directed by John Greyson (2000, Canada) New York premiere
Queer experimental pioneer John Greyson (Lilies, Uncut, Zero Patience)
returns with his most accomplished film to date, adapted from the
acclaimed novel by New York's own Dale Peck. Beatrice and Henry
are misfits in an Ontario backwater drawn together by their shared
sense of isolation, whose romance is kindled by the expectation
of Henry's imminent death from a rare cancer. At the same time,
we follow the couple forty years on, their younger and older selves
simultaneously inhabiting the same historical moment, against an
all-too-timely backdrop of the Persian Gulf War raging ceaselessly
on television. Anchored by stellar turns from Sarah Polley (The
Sweet Hereafter) and Diane Ladd (Chinatown) as the younger and older
Beatrice, Greyson effortlessly propels this challenging double narrative
to a conclusion of devastating irony. Party to follow TBA.

Remember when the rainbow flag first started flapping on Madison
Avenue? While mainstream media took the lead in marketing lesbian
and gay identities, a cunty little bastard child of the gay movement
was being born. MIX, a reinvention of the New York Lesbian & Gay
Experimental Film Festival, was to become a haven for those too
queer for "the gay community"--people of color, bisexuals, punks,
freaks, immigrants, white trash, and stone cold eccentric filmmakers
and performance artists. It was a glorious four years of film and
frolic that made the early 90s somehow more bearable. Featuring
work by Leah Gilliam, Karim Aïnouz, Charles Lofton and E.T.
Baby Maniac. Curated by Shari Frilot, MIX Director 1993-96. Memorizing
MIX reception on Saturday at 7pm at Wonderbar (505 East 6th Street).

What
to do with the cherished porn you've played so often it's worn out?
Manipulate it some more. From vintage 70s reels to mordant lesbian
deconstruction, these scintillating erotic shorts are guaranteed to
bring you to the apex of arousal. Like the Zapruder film, Antonioni's
Blow-Up, or a well-worn pair of jeans, hand-processed porn is never
as good as the first time--it's better! Featuring work by Nguyen Tan
Hoang, Wrik Mead, Stuart Gaffney and Dayna McLeod. Curated by the
Festival Committee Party to follow at The Boiler Room.

Visions of Excess:
Der Rosenkönig (The Rose King)

Directed by Werner Schroeter (1986, Germany)
A lush, operatic love triangle between a mother (Magdalena Montezuma,
in her final role), her son, and his lover set in a semi-abstract
desert of greenhouses and ruined chapels, Der Rosenkšnig is the
most homoerotic of Werner Schroeter's films and a shining example
of his radical experiments with time, narrative and performance.
Hugely influential upon German directors from Fassbinder to Wenders
to Ottinger, yet virtually unknown in the U.S., Schroeter is long
overdue for recognition. MIX is proud to present this rare screening
of an unheralded classic of queer cinema.
