This year, our sister festival south of the Equator reaches out to its neighbor Argentina, rounding up a slate of outstanding works from both countries. Straddling high and low, this program combines dramatic shorts with raucously funny hijinks. Highlights include MIX Brasil audience award winners and total trash-o-rama. Curated by André Fischer.

Sargento Garcia (Sergeant Garcia) •• (Tuti Gregiani, 2000, Brasil, 35mm, color, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 15 min.) Back in the 70s, during the military dictatorship, a young recruit meets a sergeant during his enlistment to the military. Based on a Caio Fernando Abreu short story.

Verité •• (Marcos Farinha, 2000, Brasil, video, b&w, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 4 min.) Share breakfast with Bruno, Verité and... Julian. Winner, Special Jury Award at MIX Brasil 2000.

La Prueba (Diego Lerman, 1999, Argentina, video, color, sound, in Spanish with English subtitles, 18 min.) Buenos Aires gal about town Mao falls in love with Marcia at first sight. But she already has a loyal partner, Lenin, and will have to do the impossible to prove her love.

Come (Do Me) •• (Sandra Brogioni, 2000, Brasil, video, color, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 3 min.) A parody of the song "Call Me" that makes a parallel between violence and (not) coming out. Winner at MIX Brasil Gong Show 2000.

Prohibidu's •• (Julio Pessoa, 2000, Brasil, 35mm, color, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 9 min.) In the historic transsexual club Prohibidu's, Gigi remembers a recent break-up story, while she prepares herself for a show.

Outros (Others) •• (Gustavo Spolidoro, 2000, Brasil, 35mm, color, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 11 min.) In the most traditional street of Porto Alegre, people meet, interact and discuss their and our lives. Winner, Silver Rabbit Award for Best Brasilian Short at MIX Brasil 2000.

Porra, Mona, Corra (Cum, Queer, Run) •• (Suian Barros and George Hamilton, 2000, Brasil, video, color, sound, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 7 min.) What would you do if you were late for the Gay Pride Parade? You'd run! A highlight from MIX Brasil 2000's Trash-o-rama program.

Barbie tambien puede estar triste (Barbie Can Be Sad Too) •• (Albertina Carri, 2001, Argentina, video, color, sound, in Spanish with English subtitles, 24 min.) Animation porn film with Barbie dolls. An anti-macho fable where all the unorthodox forms of sex collude to isolate the patriarch, who tries to impose as law what is only a variant of sadism and domination. Nominee, Latin American Competition, MIX Brasil 2001.
