Incorporating video, installation and performance, this dynamic
program by queer Pinay, A/PI and mixed-heritage women shatters stereotypical
notions of identity, community, sex and eroticism by filtering these
constructs through a new "mestizaje" (mixage) that allows for a
fluid, complex interplay between racial and sexual identities. Curated
by Christine Bacareza Balance and Gigi Otalvaro-Hormillosa.
Scenes
from Sungka
(Alison De La Cruz, 1999, USA, video, color, sound, 15 min.) Using
the Filipino shell game Sungka, De La Cruz creates a world inhabited
by lyrical and complex characters: an obsessive high school drill
team captain, a poetic softball player, a wisecracking talent agent
and a Spam-eating lounge singer.
Vielleicht
(Eliza Barrios, 2001, USA, video, color, sound)
raining
ash
(Michella Rivera Gravage, 2000, USA, color, video, sound, 15 min.)
Exploring
the powerful memories generated by road trips, the artist ruminates
on the feelings of isolation and wonder that arise while away from
home. This video addresses the distortion of memories over time
and the romanticization of the open road.

Minstrel (Gigi
Otalvaro-Hormillosa, 2000, USA, color, video, sound, 20 min.) A
video based on Otalvaro-Hormillosa's "Inverted Minstrel,"
a performance diorama that challenges racial binary systems of thought
by questioning and problematizing the politics of hip hop in various
cultures of resistance.
Pinay
Undercover! (Sabrina
Margarita, 1997, USA, video, color, sound, 5 min.) Sabrina
Margarita goes undercover to expose the secret strengths that are
inherent in Pilipina women, although the idea may be contrary to
popular belief. She takes a look at the mothers, lolas and titas
who've made it possible for our generation of Pinay women to recognize
it in themselves.
